The Bible presents us with many images of union, for example:
the joining of people to the Lord –
They shall ask the way to Zion, with faces turned toward it, saying, ‘Come, let us join ourselves to the LORD in an everlasting covenant that will never be forgotten.’
[Jeremiah 50:5 ESV]
the joining of two people to each other –
So they are no longer two but one flesh. What therefore God has joined together, let not man separate.
[Matthew 19:6 ESV]
the joining of the Father and the Son –
I and the Father are one.
[John 10:30 ESV]
and the joining of the Lamb and his Bride,
often seen as a symbol of the relationship between the Lord and his church –
Let us rejoice and exult and give him the glory, for the marriage of the Lamb has come, and his Bride has made herself ready;
[Revelation 19:7 ESV]
Why all this emphasis on union and on the other hand what does it mean to be separated or apart?
In this area of Key Teaching we shall explore what union is and what can prevent it. And also why, according to Emanuel Swedenborg, all union, conjunction and joining together described in the Bible relates in some way to the Divine Marriage that exists in the Lord Jesus Christ.
The complete series will be:
- Alone we cannot do good
- Fusion of love and wisdom in God
- Union of love and wisdom, good and truth, within a person mirrors the Divine Union and brings us closer to the Divine [not yet available]
- Dis-union – living from self and choosing love of self & world above all else [not yet available]
- The complementary natures of masculine and feminine leading to the inner uniting of two people [not yet available]
The goal of creation—that everything should return to the Creator and that there should be a union—becomes manifest in outermost forms.
[Divine Love and Wisdom 167]
They [angels in heaven] perceive things more Divine still, that is to say, when Jesus is mentioned by someone reading the Word they perceive Divine Good, and when Christ is mentioned, Divine Truth. And when both are mentioned together they perceive the Divine Marriage of good to truth, and of truth to good.
